Why
Did We Write Who Needs It?
We
are husband and wife lawyers (caveat: not tax lawyers, and not your
lawyers) who, despite our best efforts, manage to accumulate large
amounts of "stuff" each year. Our young son's outgrown
clothes and "too babyish" toys and books edge out the
car in the garage. Old paperbacks, obsolete eyeglasses and replaced
office equipment add to the chaos.
We
donated these items to our favorite charities when we lived in New
York City. But when we moved to Denver, Colorado in 1995, we weren't
familiar with local non-profits and the types of donations they
accept. We searched for a book to make it easy to locate the perfect
tax-exempt groups to receive what we had to give, but no such book
existed.
Soon
after, the economy took a downturn and stories began appearing in
the local newspapers describing how non-profits were suffering from
fewer monetary donations in this time of economic distress.
The
light bulb lit. If non-profit organizations could get the items
free that they would ordinarily spend money to buy, then these groups
could use their limited monetary resources directly for client-related
needs.
And
so, Who Needs It?, the Denver Metro area's indispensable
guide to giving in-kind donations, was born. It makes giving easy,
fulfilling and even financially rewarding.
