FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

From trash to cash

New book helps readers clean out the clutter, maximize tax donations
and support local non-profits during the holidays

EVERGREEN, Colo. (Nov. 22, 2004)Ready to toss your camping gear, scrap fabric and obsolete hearing aids to make room for loot from Santa?  These items – and others that might be nesting in attics or lurking in crawl spaces – can bring valuable tax deductions to their owners and help area non-profits.

Who Needs it?, a listing of area non-profits that need the stuff you have to give, was created when Nancy Friedman and her husband Steve Posner moved to Evergreen from New York City.  Accustomed to donating the toys, clothes and household goods they no longer needed to non-profits in New York City, they wanted to support their new community in a similar fashion.  However, the couple wasn’t familiar with local non-profits and what types of in-kind donations these organizations liked to receive.  Friedman and Posner knew the soft economy was preventing many non-profits from receiving as many cash donations as they had in the past – a fact borne out by the increasing number of non-profit organizations and the lack of growth in disposable income.  So the couple surveyed Denver-area non-profits to create a listing of specific items (in good, useable condition) the organizations could use.

The resulting book lists 831 non-profits four separate ways; alphabetically, by neighborhood, by goods accepted and by mission.  The listings include contact information, drop-off schedules and whether the organization makes pick-ups.  The format makes it easy for the reader to target the perfect organization to receive his or her donation.

“During the holidays, especially, people are looking to do good things.  Referencing Who Needs It? makes it easy for the reader to support his or her community.  Why put furniture, appliances or that outgrown but wearable tuxedo out on the curb for the trash collector when Who Needs It? makes it simple to recycle the item to the right non-profit and enjoy a tax deduction?” says Friedman.

Who Needs It? is available at Barnes & Noble, Tattered Cover, Borders, Boulder Bookstore and several other local stores, or by visiting the Web site, at www.whoneedsit.us.
